Release Biography
With ‘Like a Man Overboard Asking for a Drink of Water’, Sunglow explores rich electronic songwriting, looping, and sampling with each song bursting in individual personality. Washes of rubbery melodies, fuzzy synth swells, and punchy beats oscillate in and out of view as anonymous narrators hum and shout just out of earshot. Interlacing erratic sampling, Sunglow echoes past releases of the last decade, but paves a way into new relaxed sonic territory they are now calling “hypopop.” Daniel B. Lynch, the brain beneath Sunglow, tells us a little bit about the title…
“As a child when I would complain for something, I would be told by my mother that I was ‘Like a man overboard asking for a drink of water’ – a phrase which I assume she learned by the same words being used against her in situations similar to those that had me in that position. Interestingly enough, I was never concerned with the details of this saying as a child – why was it a man specifically? Had they gone overboard on a body of fresh water or salt water? Why were they asking for a drink and not help back onboard?
All I could think of was the man. What did he look like? Were his arms outstretched? How deep was the water in which he had gone overboard? Did he want ice in his water? What was he wearing? What did his hair look like? Did he have cool glasses? So here I have built him out in flesh cut of aquatic isolation and casual dress – indiscernible voice alongside electronic clunking, and now there is no mystery. Yet again, I find myself soaked with an unquenchable thirst.”
